There are many different variants of the Jazz-Funk genre. This particular Set explores the grooves from bands like Soulive, Medeski Martin and Wood, The Greyboy Allstars, and Galactic. Within this niche we find the influence of James Brown, Hip Hop, Drum N’ Bass, and a good dose of New Orleans 2nd-line funk. But undoubtedly, a whole mess of James Brown, and of course his drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks.
This funk drumming lineage gave us a newer generation of funky dudes, like Alan Evans, Billy Martin, Bill Stewart, and Stanton Moore. They take grooves like “cold sweat” and infuse it with the tightness of modern hip hop, or play it fast like Dn’B, or subdivide it New Orleans style for some funky grease. Morphing “The Godfather of Soul” into “The Godfather of Funk-With-It.” Yeah, just funk with it – that’s what Jazzunk is all about. It’s 67 beats and fills broken up within 4 different tempos and feels. The sound here is pleasingly authentic to the style.
